Uses of carbon fiber

The main purpose of carbon fiber is to composite with resin, metal, ceramics and other matrixes to make structural materials. Carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composite materials have the highest comprehensive indicators of specific strength and specific modulus among existing structural materials. Carbon fiber composite materials have advantages in areas that have strict requirements on density, stiffness, weight, and fatigue characteristics, and where high temperature and high chemical stability are required.

Carbon fiber was produced in response to the needs of cutting-edge science and technology such as rockets, aerospace and aviation in the early 1950s, and is now widely used in sports equipment, textiles, chemical machinery and medical fields. With the increasingly demanding requirements of cutting-edge technology on the technical performance of new materials, scientific and technological workers are encouraged to continue to improve. In the early 1980s, high-performance and ultra-high-performance carbon fibers appeared one after another. This was another technological leap, and it also marked that the research and production of carbon fibers had entered an advanced stage.

The composite material composed of carbon fiber and epoxy resin has become an advanced aerospace material due to its small specific gravity, good rigidity and high strength. Because the weight of the spacecraft is reduced by 1kg, the launch vehicle can be reduced by 500kg. Therefore, in the aerospace industry, there is a rush to adopt advanced composite materials. There is a vertical take-off and landing fighter whose carbon fiber composite material has accounted for 1/4 of the weight of the aircraft and 1/3 of the weight of the wing. According to reports, the key components of the three rocket thrusters on the US space shuttle and the advanced MX missile launch tube are all made of advanced carbon fiber composite materials.

In the current F1 (Formula One World Championship) car, most of the body structure is made of carbon fiber materials. A big selling point of top sports cars is also the use of carbon fiber all over the body to improve aerodynamics and structural strength.

Carbon fiber can be processed into fabric, felt, mat, belt, paper and other materials. In traditional use, carbon fiber is generally not used alone except as a thermal insulation material. It is mostly added as a reinforcing material to resin, metal, ceramics, concrete and other materials to form composite materials. Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials can be used as body substitute materials such as aircraft structural materials, electromagnetic shielding materials, artificial ligaments, etc., and for the manufacture of rocket shells, motor boats, industrial robots, automobile leaf springs, and drive shafts.
